Kartograpiya ng Pagbabago sa Arkipelago ng Nobelang Ang Lihim ng Isang Pulo ni Faustino Aguilar: Isang Metakomentaryo

Abstract

Ginagamit ng pag-aaral ang nobelang Ang Lihim ng Isang Pulo ni Faustino Aguilar upang imapa ang pagbabago ng kasaysayan at imahinasyon sa arkipelago ng Pilipinas mula sa panahon na kalikasan ang nagdidikta ng kapalaran ng mga nilalang tungo sa pagbubukas sa komersiyong pangkapuluan at kalauna’y pandaigdigan.  Muling binabasa ng pag-aaral ang kalikasan mula imahen ng ugali, kostumbre at kinagawian na nagkukubli sa mga kasamaang mapagkunwari, tungo sa isang kalikasan bilang saganang bunga ng pagtugma ng mapanlikhang pawis ng tao at mapagpaunlaking proseso ng kalikasan. At sa pinakaubod ng ganitong mga pagbabago, ang tunggalian ng maharlika at timawa, ng naghaharing-uri at ng mga proletaryado, na umiinog sa usapin ng ideolohiya, partikular ng relihiyon o sistema ng paniniwala, na kalakip ang problema ng etika o moralidad, tungkol sa paglilihim, pagkukunwari, pagtataksil, at katapatan sa pakikipagkapwa.

Cartography of Change in the Archipelago of Faustino Aguilar’s Novel Ang Lihim ng Isang Pulo: A Metacommentary

Abstract (english)

The study utilizes the novel Ang Lihim ng Isang Pulo (lit. “The Secret of an Island”) by Faustino Aguilar to map the changes in history and imagination of archipelago in the Philippines from a time when nature dictates the fate of creatures, toward the opening of an archipelagic commerce that is eventually global as well. Nature is reread in the study in terms of values, customs, and traditions that hide in the deceptive evil, toward a nature as a bounty effected by the harmony between the creative sweat of the human and the permissive process of the environment. And at the core of these changes is the struggle between the maharlika and timawa, the ruling class and the proletariat, that revolves around the discourse of ideology, particularly of religion or system of beliefs, that comes with the problem of ethics or morality, regarding secrets, pretenses, betrayals, and faithfulness in companionship.
