Abstract

Title (English)

Teleserye and Contemporaneity

Abstract (English)

In this essay, I speculate on the nature of teleserye or televisual soap opera in the Philippines. I call this “contemporaneity,” referring to the quality of the series signifying to the contemporary life or social events. Retaining the view that teleserye is literature, and as such, advancing of what is called “symbolic action,” it is assumed that the teleserye is an effective tool in raising consciousness regarding social conditions. I present this speculation through a “pagbásang paloob” (an “inward reading”) of a featured teleserye, Wildflower. I treat this method as further politicizing reading of the teleserye, that effectively converges the form and the context from which it emerges.
