Abstract

Title (English)

Rizal’s Aswang

Abstract (English)

Through the concept of the pharmakon as a lens, this essay offers a reading on Jose Rizal's “La curacion de los hechizados” and the illustrations accompanying the said article. This reading is offered to the cure advised by Rizal as to constellate the dissemination of such cure as poison, writing, and sacrifice. In doing such constellation, the essay aims to foreground the aswang and Rizal's “pangangaswang” on his mysterious subject, and this way, opens a discourse that recognizes the folkloré as a part of the slippery and elusive identification of the Filipinos, who were governed and also suppressed by medicine, the church, and the colonial rule.
