Abstract

Patuloy ang pag-unlad sa kontemporanyo ng Boys’ Love o BL genre sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng mundo, lalo na sa mga bansa sa Asya. Manipestasyon ng pag-unlad na ito ang pagdami ng mga mismong seryeng BL, at ganoon din ang pagdami ng mga tagapanood nito. Isa ang Thailand sa mga pangunahing tagapagbunsod ng BL sa rehiyon at nagpalago nito sa pamamagitan ng tuloy-tuloy na paggawa ng mga bagong serye sa nakalipas na dekada. Sinasalamin ng mga seryeng BL na produkto ng Thailand ang kultura ng bansa, kabilang na ang ilang mga kagawian, paniniwala, kaugalian, at perspektibang kaugnay ng relihiyong Budismo. Sa papel na ito, tatlong sikat na seryeng BL mula sa Thailand na inilabas sa nakalipas na dalawang taon ang sinuri. Ang mga ito ay ang: A Tale of Thousand Stars (2021), I Told Sunset About You (2020), at Bite Me (2021). Sinisiyasat dito ang mga kagawian at perspektibang Budista na nakapaloob sa mga kuwento’t isinasabuhay ng mga karakter. Ilan sa mga kagawiang ipinakita ay ukol sa mga ritwal, pagdalaw sa mga templo, at pagdarasal. Sa kabilang banda, masasalamin rin sa tatlong serye ang mga perspektibang may kinalaman sa karma, paghihirap, kapayakan, identidad, seksuwalidad, pangarap, at pag-ibig. Patunay ang mga ito na ang BL genre ay may mahalagang potensiyal na magsilbing daluyan ng mga diskursong Budista, at diskursong kritikal hinggil sa kasalukuyan.

Buddhist Perspectives and Practices in Three BL Series from Thailand

Abstract (English)

The Boys’ Love or BL genre continues to grow in various parts of the world, especially in countries in Asia. Proof of this growth is seen in the proliferation itself of several BL series, as well as in the proliferation of its viewers. Thailand is one of the pioneers of BL in Asia through its continuous production of new series over the past decade. Thailand’s BL series reflect the culture of the country including some of its practices, beliefs, attitudes, and perspectives related to the Buddhist religion. In this paper, three popular BL series from Thailand released over the past two years were examined. These are: A Tale of Thousand Stars (2021), I Told Sunset About You (2020), and Bite Me (2021). Examined here were the Buddhist practices and perspectives enshrined in the stories as well as embodied by the characters. Some of the practices presented include rituals, pilgrimage in temples, and practices in praying. On the other hand, the three series reflected perspectives also related to karma, suffering, simplicity, identity, sexuality, dreams, and love. These prove that the BL genre has a significant potential to serve as a conduit for discourses on Buddhism, and for critical discourses regarding the present.
