Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University, is launching its 27th issue on Sept. 29, 2016, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at CTC 413, Ateneo de Manila University. KK 27 features essays by Patricia May Jurilla on the history of the Filipino novel in English; José Miguel Díaz Rodríguez on Filipino responses to ‘neo-colonial’ encounters; Jeremy De Chavez on Aureus Solito’s The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros; and Rommel Curaming on postcolonial studies and pantayong pananaw in Philippine historiography. The Forum Kritika on Intermedial Encounters in Southeast Asia is guest edited by Elmo Gonzaga. The Forum Kritika features an introduction to the essays by Gonzaga; Dafna Ruppin on moving pictures and intermedial crossings in turn-of-the-century colonial Indonesia; Sudarmoko on the audiences, readers, and influences of folk tales in modern Indonesian Literature; and Tito Imanda on early filmmaking of indigenous performers in highland central Java. The Monograph Section features Katherine D. Ojano’s reading of Ninotchka Rosca’s State of War as mythopoeia; and Oscar Tantoco Serquiña, Jr. on the intertwined themes of migration and sexuality in Liza Magtoto’s Care Divas. The Short Takes section, a suite of curated reviews on a single work (book, performance, film, or exhibit) considers the work of Buen Calubayan. The section includes reviews by Lisa Ito, Brylle Tabora; and Carlomar Arcangel Daoana. The Literary Section features authors whose works open up new possibilities in literary form and approach. The authors in the literary section include Pauline Lacanilao, Ben Aguilar, Lakan Umali, Carlo Pacolor Garcia (trans. Michael Balili), and Christian Tablazon. A simple reception follows the launch.
