Events: Kritika Kultura Lecture Series presents Thea Quiray Tagle

September 02, 2017

Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University will host a lecture by Thea Quiray Tagle titled “The Art of Salvage: Mapping Blackness and Waste through Michael Arcega’s Nacireman Excavation.” The lecture is on Sept. 8, 2017, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at CTC 404, Ateneo de Manila University. The lecture is open to the public.

Tagle’s abstract reads: “This lecture excavates the sedimented histories and geographies of anti-black violence in San Francisco, California embedded in Filipino American artist Michael Arcega’s mixed media pieces, made for his 2015 residency at Recology (the city’s privately-owned waste management facility). At Recology’s Artist In Residence program, cultural workers repurpose materials salvaged from the dump, transforming the city’s waste into objects with educational and artistic value. These artworks are exhibited at Recology’s facilities, located in Bayview Hunters Point—the last remaining African American neighborhood within San Francisco’s borders. Tracing the visual lexicon deployed in, and the conditions of production and circulation of, Arcega’s works alongside the development of Bayview’s (un)natural landscapes, I ruminate on the aesthetics of salvage and the mattering of blackness in the US and globally, from World War II through the present."
