Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in cooperation with the Ateneo de Manila University Press, the Fine Arts Department (AdMU), and Areté—will host a conversation with Gina Apostol and Dominic Sy. The event, which will be moderated by Daryll Delgado, is on Aug. 15, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Ben Chan ArtSuite, Ateneo Art Gallery, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University. The event is open to the public.
About the event
Gina Apostol's Insurrecto was released in 2018 to rave reviews. Dominic Sy's A Natural History of Empire was selected by Apostol as the winner of Kritika Kultura / Ateneo de Manila University Press First Book Prize and will be released in 2019. The two authors read from and discuss their work and their shared interests.
About the resource persons
Gina Apostol, award-winning novelist, served as the inaugural judge of the KK / ADMU Press First Book Prize. Her achievements include the Juan Laya Prize for the Novel (Philippine National Book Award) for both Bibliolepsy and The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata, which also won the biennial Gintong Aklat Award from the National Book Development Board. Her third novel, Gun Dealers’ Daughter, won the 2013 PEN/Open Book Award and was shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize. Her fourth novel, Insurrecto, was released in 2018.
Dominic Sy was the inaugural winner of the KK / ADMU Press First Book Prize. He teaches composition and literature at the Department of English and Comparative Literature in University of the Philippines Diliman. He received 2nd prize for the short story in the 2012 Amelia Lapena Bonifacio Literary Contest, and won 3rd place at the inaugural F. Sionil Jose Young Writers Award in 2015. He was a fellow at the 12th Ateneo National Writers Workshop in 2014, the 2015 UST National Writers’ Workshop, and the 2016 Iligan National Writers Workshop. A Natural History of Empire is forthcoming from Ateneo de Manila University Press.
About the moderator
Daryll Delgado’s first novel, Collateral, is forthcoming from Ateneo de Naga University Press. Her first book of short stories, After the Body Displaces Water (USTPH, 2012), won the 32nd National Book Award for Best Book of Short Fiction in English, and was a finalist in the 2013 Madrigal-Gonzales First Book Award. She has received a Philippines Free Press award for her fiction in 2010. She trained as a journalist, works for an international NGO, and writes global reports on labor rights issues. She resides in Quezon City with her husband, William. She was born and raised in Tacloban City, which she continues to call home.
