Eka Kurniawan

Abstract

The following is a transcript of the conversation with Indonesian writer Eka Kurniawan, who was in Manila on 30 September–4 October as keynote speaker at the 85th PEN International Congress, with its theme and congress title Speaking in Tongues: Literary Freedom and Indigenous Languages. This interview is part of a podcast series recorded for Areté, in collaboration with Kritika Kultura and the Creative Writing Program of the Ateneo Department of Fine Arts. The podcasts are recorded in the Emmanuel Torres Literary Arts Room named in honor of the poet, critic, and literature professor, who was also the first and longtime curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery. The interview was organized with support from the Office of the Dean of the School of Humanities, ADMU, and the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP). It was conducted by Dominic Sy, who teaches with the Department of English and Comparative Literature, University of the Philippines, Diliman.
