Abstract

Isang pag-aaral ang artikulong ito ng pamamaraan ng pagtuturo ng wika, kultura, at saling Filipino sa International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ), bilang isang Philippine community school na gumagamit ng kurikulum ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon (DepEd). Susuriin dito ang mga hamon na kinahaharap ng mga guro ng IPSJ at ng mga mag-aaral ng paaralan na may multikultural na set-up. Dadalumatin ang ilang mga konsepto at katangiang kultural ng bansang Saudi Arabia at Pilipinas na nakaiimpluwensiya sa mas mabilis o matagal na pagkatuto ng mga mag-aaral sa mga salitang magkaugnay; maaaring mga konseptong kultural ito na magkahalintulad o magkasalungat sa dalawang bansa. Sa huli, magbibigay ng ilang rekomendasyon o kagamitang panturo batay na rin sa mga mungkahi at rekomendasyon ng anim (6) na guro ng Filipino ng IPSJ na nakapanayam ng may-akda tungkol sa pagtuturo ng Filipinong wika at kultura.

The Learning of Filipino Language and Culture by the Filipino Diaspora in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Abstract (English)

This article evaluates the methods used in teaching language, culture, and translation in Filipino at the International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ), as a Philippine community school that follows the curriculum provided by the Department of Education (DepEd). This will examine the challenges faced by the teachers in IPSJ and students of the school with a multicultural set-up. This will further articulate some concepts and cultural characteristics of Saudi Arabia and the Philippines that effect a faster or slower learning capacity among students of the related languages; these may be cultural characteristics that are similar or distinct between the two nations. Finally, this article will offer a few recommendations and materials for teaching based on the advice and suggestions of six (6) teachers from IPSJ interviewed by the author about teaching Filipino language and culture.
