Mga Dumadaloy at Umaagos na Alon ng Imperyo sa Mindanaw at Sulu

Abstract

Ang sanaysay na ito ay nagninilay sa personal, politikal, at akademikong mga danas sa isla-rehiyon ng Mindanaw at karatig na arkipelago ng Sulu. Minamapa rito ang mga kasaysayan at naratibo na kakabit ng kolonyalismo—mula sa naganap na Bud Dajo massacre na pumatay sa halos 600 hanggang 1000 Moro, Jabidah massacre noong 1968, at hanggang sa kasalukuyang panahon ng neoliberalismo—na nagbibigay hulma sa naiwang bakas, marka, at latay na dumadaloy at umaagos pa rin bilang alon ng imperyo sa pang-araw-araw na buhay ng mga taong nilukob. Sa huli, sa pamamagitan ng isang maikling pelikula mula Tawi-Tawi na may pamagat na Manis ma Pikilan (Beauty in My Mind) (2018), sinuri at ipinaliwanag ko kung papaaanong ang imperyo ay patuloy na nakikipagtalasatasan sa animo’y nagbabagong panahunan ng pangnagdaan, pangkasalukuyan, at panghinaharap.

Title (English)

The Streaming and Flowing Waves of Empire in Mindanaw and Sulu

Abstract (English)

This essay reflects on the personal, political, and academic experiences in the island-region of Mindanaw and the nearby archipelago of Sulu. It maps out the histories and narratives enmeshed in colonialism—from the Bud Dajo massacre that killed 600 to 1000 Moro people, the Jabidah massacre in 1968, to the contemporary neoliberal times—that contour the shape of the remaining traces, marks, and scars that stream and flow as waves of empire in the quotidian lives of the colonized people. Finally, through a short film from Tawi-Tawi titled Manis ma Pikilan (Beauty in My Mind) (2018), I analyzed and discussed how empire continues to converse with the seemingly conjugating tenses of the past, present, and future.
