Mga Biktimang Imahen ng Sundalong Americano at ng Iba: Mga Alegoryang Post-1898 ng Imperyal na Pagbubuo-ng- Bansa bilang “Pag-ibig at Digma”

Abstract

Sa siping ito buhat sa orihinal na sanaysay, binibigyang-kritika ko ang retorika ng imperyalistang historyograpiya ng mga Americano, politika, at produksiyong kultural kaugnay ng Digmaang Filipino-Americano, at ang pagsasateritoryong-kolonyal ng Estados Unidos sa Pilipinas na kinahantungan nito. Iginigiit kong ang mga diskursong imperyalista ng mga Americano hinggil sa Pilipinas at mga Pilipino sa yugtong ito ay nagpapalawig at humahalili sa pananakop ng Estados Unidos at pag-aaklas ng mga Pilipino patungo sa dominyo ng kultura, na nagbunga ng digmaan laban sa mga Pilipino bilang Iba ng America, at itinataguri ko sa sanaysay bilang “ibang digma.” Sa pagmamanipula ng pananakop sa Pilipinas gamit ang nagtutunggaling termino ng digmaan laban, at pag-ibig sa mga Pilipino, naisakatuparan ng Estados Unidos sa pamamagitan ng mga representasyonal na diskurso at mga tekstong ito na gawing sabayang ubod at laylayan ang aneksasyon ng Pilipinas tungo sa pagbubuo nito bilang isang imperyo at bilang isang bansa.

Casualty Figures of the American Soldier and the Other: Post-1898 Allegories of Imperial Nation-Building as “Love and War”

Abstract (English)

In this excerpt from the original essay, I critique the rhetoric of American imperialist historiography, politics, and cultural production around the Philippine-American War, and the US colonial annexation of the Philippines to which it led. I argue that American imperialist discourses on the Philippines and Filipinos during this period served to extend and displace the war of US conquest and Filipino resistance into the domain of culture, resulting in a war against Filipinos as America’s Other, which I term here as “the other war.” Couching its colonization of the Philippines in the contradictory terms of war against, and love for Filipinos, the US, in these representational discourses and texts, made the annexation of the Philippines both central and marginal to its own making as an empire and as a nation.
