Abstract

Title (English)

An Imagination of Tenderness: The Rise of Boys’ Love in the Philippines During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract (English)

The sudden popularity of Boys’ Love—also known as BL—in the Philippines is phenomenal. Read as a fantasy of young love, the TV series present stories of young men loving men. BL became a hit among many Filipino viewers since Thailand’s 2gether the Series premiered on YouTube in February 2020. Around the same time, Filipinos were forced to stay at home after President Rodrigo Duterte imposed a massive lockdown, which is considered as one of the longest and toughest in the world, in response to the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus or COVID-19. If science fiction films are allegories of repressed horrors (Sontag 220), BL stirs an imagination of tenderness. What makes Thai BL so appealing, particularly a series well received by viewers from different parts of the world? What promise does it hold for audiences? What anxiety lurks behind this imagination? This essay will attempt to address these queries with an emphasis on the convergence of the rise of BL in the Philippines and recent events in the country.
