Abstract

Abstract (English)

As we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Australia and the Philippines, it is also important to evaluate the relationship between the two countries from the lens of Filipino diaspora in the continent. The aim of this paper is to critically reflect on the role of the said diaspora on the presence of Araling Pilipino (AP) or Philippine Studies (PS) in the Australian continent. On the other hand, this could also be a study of the current situation and the future of this diaspora in the continent through the lens of AP/PS. The paper is limited to tracing and narrativizing in general terms the migration of Filipinos in Australia and the experience of emergent scholarship in Melbourne, Victoria. Through this, it is proposed that centers of AP/PS studies and programs are not neccesary to better understand Filipino culture in Australia, nor Australia itself through AP/PS.
