Ang Pagmamapa sa Kalunsuran at mga Kontemporanyong Obra Mula sa Mutable Truths

Abstract

Ilalahad sa papel na ito ang paglalakbay sa dalawang siyudad sa Pilipinas: lungsod Quezon na naging kapitolyo ng bansa, at ang Maynila na una at kasalukuyang kapitolyo. Babanggitin ang iba’t ibang espasyo sa lungsod na may kaugnayan sa sining at kultura ng mga lokalidad sa pamamagitan ng etnograpiya ng pagcocommute. Sa pagmamapa ay ilalahad din ang mga isyu sa kalunsuran at iuugnay ito sa mga obra mula sa Mutable Truths: Perspective in Philippine Contemporary Art, na eksibisyon ng mga alagad ng sining sa Pilipinas. Ang eksibisyon na isinagawa sa Ateneo Art Gallery ay isang ani sa relasyon ng La Trobe University at Pamantasang Ateneo de Manila. Ang mga limang alagad ng sining na pinili para sa pagsusuri ay ang mga nagsipagwagi sa Ateneo Art Awards: Fernando Zobel Prizes for Visual Art na nabigyan ng pagkatataon na makalahok sa residence program ng Visual Arts Centre (VAC) ng La Trobe University sa Australia. Ito ay sina Mark Salvatus (2010), Buen Calubayan (2013), Lyle Buencamino (2007), Kawayan De Guia (2011), at Martha Atienza (2012). Sila ang mga napiling suriin sa papel na ito dahil na rin sa paggalugad ng kanilang mga sining sa iba’t ibang isyu sa lungsod at sa mga komunidad, na siya namang ibinunsod ng mga hindi pagkapantay-pantay.

Title (English)

Mapping the City and Contemporary Works from Mutable Truths

Abstract (English)

This paper offers a journey into two cities in the Philippines: Quezon City which was once the national capital, and Manila, the first and current national capital. Mention will be made of various places connected with local art and culture through the ethnography of commuting. With this mapping, issues on the city will be tackled and linked to the works from Mutable Truths: Perspective in Philippine Contemporary Art, an exhibit of artists from the Philippines. This exhibit, held at the Ateneo Art Gallery, was a harvest borne from the relations between La Trobe University and Ateneo de Manila University. The five artists chosen for this analysis were all winners of the Ateneo Art Awards: Fernando Zobel Prizes for Visual Art and were granted program residencies at the Visual Arts Centre (VAC) of La Trobe University in Australia. Mark Salvatus (2010), Buen Calubayan (2013), Lyle Buencamino (2007), Kawayan De Guia (2011), and Martha Atienza (2012) were all chosen in this paper for their artworks that explored different issues in the city and in communities, ultimately resulting from inequalities.
